So this one was a little tricky, because of how Sun Bao approaches the monk’s advice. Basically, what he is doing, is avoiding all things that have the character “water” in them. Water itself is an obvious one, but the word for “ditch” also has water in it, as does the water buffalo. As the chapter goes on, the things Sun Bao is scared of get less and less related to water itself, but they still have the character in them. The flowers are just daffodils, but that doesn’t exactly make a lot of sense in English in this context, so I went with a more literate translation to keep the water theme.
